Boekenhoutskloof Estate 2000 Porcupine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon

Considered one the best wineries in South Africa (with the highly seeked and exquisitely balanced Boekenhoutskloof's range), Boekenhoutskloof is also known to produce great affordable wines (the famous Chocolate Block and the Porcupine and Wolftrap ranges). Boekenhoutskloof is a fairly well-known winery in the Franschhoek region of South Africa. Porcupine Ridge is actually winemaker Marc Kent’s second label. He has created 2000 Porcupine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon from Boekenhoutskloof Estates.

South Africa has been a wine-producing region for much longer than I realized, over 350 years. This wine is medium cherry-brick red with the look of an aged red wine…that subtle browness at the edges. The nose isn’t overpowering, but offers some nice, juicy red berry flavors of fresh red raspberries and red currants…along side some distinct cedar and cigar box.

Boekenhoutskloof has consistently elicited 90-plus ratings from Robert Parker Jr., the world’s most influential wine critic. Boekenhoutskloof  Syrah 1997 still holds the record for the highest score achieved by a South African wine in The Wine Advocate. Boekenhoutskloof consists of four wine ranges:

  • Boekenhoutskloof
  • Chocolate Block
  • Porcupine Ridge
  • The Wolftrap

Marc Kent is the Chief winemaker and General Manager at Boekenhoutskloof. In 2007 Marc was awarded with the title of “Diners Club Winemaker of the year” for his Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2005. The latest Robert Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide and the 2009 Wine Report acknowledges Boekenhoutskloof as South Africa’s # 1 producer. Our congratulations to Marc and his achievements!

“A lot of knarly terrain and some steep but not too long climbs. There are a few easy trails with (fern gully, the maze & andrews theater) but even the main trail can be dificult for beginners. There are lots of great trails for seasoned riders and several big drops and technical down hills for the advanced or just plain crazy riders. ”

There is also the ultimate treetop experience at Eaglecrest Aerial Park using canopy ziplines, monkey walks and wobbly bridges in Muskoka near Bracebridge, Ontario. “An incredible view from the 100 ft climb to the treetops of Porcupine Ridge.

Porcupine Ridge Trail – Muskoka, Canada

Looking for adventure in Muskoka? ... A more challenging option is Porcupine Ridge, also outside Bracebridge, across from Santa's VillageTo know fear or have no fear. That is the question at Porcupine Ridge, a gutsy park with relentless challenge. What doesn’t make you freeze, walk or turn back, will make you stronger, more aggressive and determined. 25 kms of trails with loops of varying lengths. In winter, nordic or cross country skiing is the thing to do here.

A veritable Christmas gift for mountain bikers. All trails were built by employees of the local bike shop, and are all built in the North Shore style of trail building. Lots of twisty singletrack loops that all join back to one main loop. You can go for as long or as short as you want to go, and join loops together to make one big ride. A great place to ride, but not for the faint of heart nor unskilled. Expect steep drops, log rides, and technical terrain not typical of your “neighborhood” trail.
